Welcome to Amy's & Kermit's Highmark Walk Page!
THANK YOU FUR YOUR SUPPORT!
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our page and learn about our work with Northeast Search and Rescue (NESAR). I hope that you'll consider making a donation to support the crucial work of this worthy emergency response organization. And, whether or not you are able to donate today, you can help us reach our goal by sharing this page with your friends, via email or your social media feeds. The more people we reach, the greater our chance of success. Thank you!
Why NESAR? A few years ago, I realized that my buddy Kermit, Super Genius Border Collie-Cattle Dog, was in serious need of a job. And I was looking for a volunteering opportunity that would push me beyond my comfort zone. So, when we heard about the good work being done by the human and four-legged volunteers of NESAR, we decided to give search and rescue work a try.
In just a few short years, Kermit and I have learned things and had experiences that we never could have expected! I've been swept along by the frigid Lehigh River as I learned to save myself and others from swiftwater and floods. I've learned to read a compass and orient myself in the deep woods. I've been taught knots to help secure ropes in high-angle rescues ... CPR and First Aid (even K9 First Aid!) ... how to avoid being chomped by a rattlesnake (eek!) ... how to track someone based on their footprints and other clues ... the differences between the behaviors of a lost adult and a lost child ... and so much more!
Kermit loves bounding through fields, woods, and neighborhoods, sniffing out the person who needs his help. He even overcame his fear of water to dash across streams and wade through cold brooks.
But, the most amazing part of our search-and-rescue journey has been experiencing families' joy and relief when their loved ones are returned to them - a missing child, an elderly relative sent wandering by dementia, a father injured and lost while hunting, and more. And just as inspiring is seeing my teammates assist during natural disasters, deploying at all hours of the day and night, risking their own safety, to help flood victims or a highway of motorists stranded in a blizzard.
All this and much more is what my amazing NESAR teammates give in service. NESAR has been serving our neighbors and our nation for 50+ years! Our team members - both human and K9 - have been integral to search and rescue/recovery operations in the aftermaths of the World Trade Center attack, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy. We are on call 24/7/365. In an average year, we receive calls for approcimately 50 searches and log 10,000+ search and training hours.
As an all-volunteer organization, we rely on our fundraising efforts (and very often our own wallets) to finance the equipment, personal gear, and specialized training necessary to fulfill our mission. With your support, we can continue to respond when people are lost or injured and communities are threatened by hurricanes, floods, and other disasters in our region.
And, our human team members aren't the only ones who appreciate your support. K9 Kermit and our other four-legged members are barking your praises for helping us to save lives!
Thank you for supporting us in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community! You are making a real difference to our team and the communities that we serve.
