I came to SAR from the climbing and whitewater kayaking environments. We were starting to develop our life on the family farm which included wonderful Labrador retrievers. Sadly, there had been a drowning in the local river and SAR dogs were called in to attempt to find the bodies and provide closure to the grieving family. The local paper ran an extensive article on how the dogs were used and announced the team was looking for new members with outdoor skills and dogs…. I had both.
My dog was Max, a bear of a chocolate lab that loved life to the fullest. He never met a dog or a kid that wasn’t his friend. Doing our partnership Max helped dozens of people and loved every moment of it. When he saw me reaching for the search pack, he went insane and blocked the door so that I couldn’t leave without him.
Max was recovering from surgery on 9/11 so he didn’t have the chance to serve in that dramatic event. And while I had the honor of serving as a coordinator for all the K9 teams at the Fresh Kill land-fill search site (all rubble and debris was searched a second and third time at that location) I knew that Max was there in spirit with me.
When Max finally passed away from old age at 14 years, we proudly buried him in his SAR vest, along with his favorite toy.
After Max, I focused on other aspects of SAR. I lead the development of NESAR’s Swiftwater/flood water rescue team. As the head of that team, we were called to Katrina and we were responsible for the rescue of over 2,300 people in 10 days.
Now as the most senior member of NESAR I serve as the Team’s training officer. This includes helping my fellow Team mates develop the essential skills as well as helping other teams to develop the basic search and rescue skills.
My most proud moment in SAR has been servicing along-side my son, Marc, and then seeing him become the Chief of Northeast Search and Rescue.
Thank you for supporting me in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community.
