Welcome to Amy's & Kermit's Highmark Walk Page!
THANK YOU FUR YOUR SUPPORT!
Welcome to my personal fundraising page for the 2019 Highmark Walk. I hope that you'll consider making a donation on my behalf to support the crucial work of Northeast Search and Rescue (NESAR).
Why NESAR? A few years ago, I realized that my buddy Kermit, Super Genius Cattle Dog-Border Collie, was in serious need of a job. And I was looking for a new volunteering opportunity. So, when we heard about the good work being done by the human and four-legged volunteers of NESAR, we decided to give search and rescue work a try.
In just a few short years, Kermit and I have learned things and had experiences that we never could have expected! I've been swept along by the frigid Lehigh River as I learned to save myself and others from swiftwater and floods. I've learned to read a compass and orient myself in the thickets of the Pocono Mountains. I've been taught knots to help secure ropes in high-angle rescues ... CPR and First Aid ... even K9 First Aid ... how to avoid being chomped by a rattlesnake or copperhead (eeek!) ... how to track someone based on their footprints and other clues ... the differences between the behaviors of a lost adult and a lost child ... and so much more!
Kermit (who is waaaaaay smarter than me, as those who have met him know!) picked up air-scenting almost instantly. He loves bounding through fields, woods, and neighborhoods, sniffing out the person who needs his help (and who may also have a few slices of hot dog on hand ...) Kermie has overcome his fear of water to dash across streams and wade through cold brooks. He even likes training in water detection on the team's boat! He nailed his indication - the signal that he gives me to tell me that he has found the missing subject - almost immediately ... and then added his own Kermie-style touch to it, so that now he runs back to me, sits, and barks to say, "Hurry up, slowpoke!"
All this and much more is what my amazing NESAR teammates give in service to reuniting lost and missing people with their loved ones. NESAR has been serving our neighbors and our nation for more than 45 years. Our K9 search units, water rescue/recovery units, and wilderness evac units regularly work emergency searches throughout Eastern and Central Pennsylvania, New Jersey and beyond. Our team members — both human and K9 — have been integral to search and rescue/recovery operations in the aftermaths of the World Trade Center attack, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy. We are on call 24/7/365. In an average year, we receive calls for approximately 50 searches and log 10,000+ search and training hours.
As an all-volunteer organization, we rely on our fundraising efforts (and very often our own wallets) to finance the equipment, personal gear, and specialized training necessary to fulfill our commitment to the communities that we serve. Your generosity will help us continue to bring home lost and injured people – hikers, campers, hunters, dementia patients, young children (often with special needs) – and respond when your friends and neighbors are threatened by hurricanes, floods, and other disasters in our region.
Donors like you provide the financial and moral support we need to continue our mission. And, our human team members aren’t the only ones who appreciate your support. K9 Kermit and our other four-legged members are barking your praises for helping us to save lives!
Thank you for supporting me in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community! You are making a real difference to our team and the communities that we serve.
