The vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters is all youth achieve their full potential. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving: higher aspirations, greater confidence, improved relationships, avoidance of risky behaviors, and educational success. Family Services of NW PA mission's statement is We Strengthen Families and Transform Lives.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the number one mentoring program in the United States and is provided to Erie and Western Crawford Counties by the sponsoring agency Family Services of NW PA. It is a positive program that focuses on meeting the basic developmental needs of youth, typically ages 6 through 13 who are in need of additional support. Volunteer mentors provide these youth with positive social, recreational, cultural and interpersonal activities, along with supportive friendships and leadership. They maintain consistent contact 4 to 6 hours each month, often in a one to one setting, with the youth for a minimum of one full year. Mentors utilize teachable moments to help the youth learn social and life-long skills. Mentors do not substitute the role of the parent, but are seen as additional positive adult support in the youth's life. The relationships are monitored regularly by professional support staff that help to problem solve obstacles in relationship development and to ensure the safety of the youth.
